UMPI softball drops 4
The softball team from the University of Maine at Presque Isle finished the season over the weekend with an 11-15 record.
Last Wednesday, the Owls could not hold down the Thomas College Terriers, losing both games of a doubleheader in Waterville.
In the 9-7 loss in game one, UMPI fought back from a 9-0 deficit after four innings but fell short in the comeback effort.
In the fifth, the Owls got on the board with two runs as Carly Bell and Shannon Brown each had RBIs. Down 9-2 entering the final inning, the Owls began a rally as five runners came across to score to draw to within two runs until Terriers hurler Faith Robinson struck out Jessica Campbell for the final out to close out the win.
Bell, Brown and Sara Packard each had two hits for the Owls, while Brown drove in a pair of runs. Packard went all seven innings, striking out four in the loss.
UMPI lost game two by a score of 6-1, with Dani Smith providing the lone hit for the Owls.
UMPI was swept in another doubleheader at Lyndon State College in Lyndonville, Vt. Sunday to end its season.
The Owls fell in the opener in extra innings, 10-9. UMPI came back from 4-0 and 8-7 deficits to take the lead, but the hosts scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to sneak away with the victory.
Nicole Marucci had three hits to pace the Owls offensively.
The 12-1 loss in the second game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule. Bell and Smith managed the only hits for UMPI.
