SAD 1 Adult Ed awards 29 diplomas
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Twenty-nine students graduated from SAD 1 Adult and Community Education this spring.
More than 300 people attended the May 27, 2016 commencement ceremonies. Class Marshal Cindy Tardy led 22 participating graduates into the Presque Isle High School auditorium to receive their high school and HiSET diplomas, accompanied by pianist Eva Ireland.
LeRae Kinney, adult education director, welcomed those in attendance. Dr. William Egeler, dean of students at Northern Maine Community College, addressed the graduates. Roxanne Burt gave the invocation and Arjuna Elliott was class speaker. Mayce Kinney sang the national anthem and “Anyway” by Martina McBride. Kamden Bates assisted with the lights and sound system.
Burt received the Outstanding Student Award and Arjuna Elliott received a Student Recognition Award. Jim Bubar of the Presque Isle Rotary Club awarded a $500 scholarship to Kayla DeMoura. Kinney awarded Joseph Boone a $500 scholarship from the Colby Simonson Memorial Fund.
Several students were recognized for induction into the National Adult Education Honor Society. They are Brittni Basu, Boone, DeMoura, Kori Malenfant, Jamison O’Neal, Cindy Tardy and Rheanne Wakeling.
Sharon Craig was named teacher of the year, and Karen Raymond received a 10 year service pin. A teacher service pin was presented to Russell Gagnon for 20 years of service. Special retirement gifts were awarded to Brian Ross for 43 years of service and to Maxine Maynard for 23 years of service to adult education.
SAD 1 Superintendent Brian Carpenter and Kinney then presented the graduates with their diplomas. Lucy Richard, chairperson of the SAD 1 Board of Directors, presented the charge to the graduating class.
