1967: Two break-ins occur overnight in Caribou

115 Years Ago – May 6,  1902

Back in Caribou Milton Lufkin arrived home last week from Southern California; his father and mother are expected soon.  Mr. and Mrs. Lufkin are among our oldest and most respected citizens, and everyone is glad to welcome them back again.

Purchase Byron O. Noyes of Island Falls has purchased the jewelry store of E.E. Powers on Main street and took possession Monday.  Mr. Noyes is a jeweler who thoroughly understand the business of watch making.

100 Years Ago – May 10, 1917

They’re all over Good judges state that in the neighborhood of 1,000 automobiles passed over the Caribou-Presque Isle state road Sunday.  The road was “alive” with them, groups of five, six and seven being noted.

Late farming — Farming is much later this year than last; a few have planted their wheat and other have put in a few potatoes on high and well drained land.

75 Years Ago – May 6, 1942

Sugar ration — Sugar rationing cards numbering slightly over 7,300 had been issued from Monday up to Thursday morning at the Caribou High School registration center, as announced today by Supt. James A. Hamlin.  The local school which have been closed since Monday in order to allow teachers to act as registrars.

Soldier in Medical Corps — Pvt. Oren St. Peter is now stationed at the Medical Replacement Training Center here.  He formerly resided at Caribou, Maine.  Pvt. St. Peter will be trained at a medical soldier during his stay here.

50 Years Ago – May 10, 1967

Break-ins — Under investigation by local police are two early morning break-ins which occurred at Frederick’s Restaurant and the neighboring Belmain Auto Sales, both on Access Highway.  A person or persons entering the premises in both instances did some interior damage.  A small amount of money was taken from the restaurant, said Darrell L. Belmain, owner of the auto sales service.  Frederick Hackett, owner of the restaurant, said the break in at his establishment occurred sometime between 2 and 8:30 a.m.  The thieves took $50 in change and damaged a cigarette machine and juke box.

Centralized hospital Members of the Caribou Memorial Board of directors have renewed their efforts toward a centrally located facility between Caribou, Fort Fairfield and Presque Isle.  Following a meeting here, the board asked Presque Isle and Fort Fairfield hospital officials for a prompt and definite answer following their next meeting.  If this plan shall fail, the communities of Limestone, Fort Fairfield, Stockholm, New Sweden, Woodland and others would be approached.  If both of these plans fail, Caribou will go along with ideas for local expansion as recommended by the hospital firm.

25 Years Ago – May 6, 1992

Recognized Former physician H. Douglas Collins, M.D., was awarded a Mastership in the American College of Physicians at the College’s 73rd annual meeting in San Diego, Calif.  Dr. Collins, who practiced general internal medicine in Caribou until 1987, was on the staff of Cary Medical Center and now lives at Sugarloaf during the winters and Wentham, Mass. in the summers.

Mall work stalled Difficulty in lining up financial support has thrown the Aroostook Centre Mall project into chaos, voiding the long-promised October grand opening.  Developer John Capenos of Oneida-Ontario Co., based in Dewitt, NY, allegedly has had last-minute problems with closing a loan required to being construction on the North Main Street, Presque Isle site.  The city’s $3 million-plus infrastructure project on Maysville Street, including the construction of a connector to the Fort Fairfield Road, remains on schedule.
