HOULTON, Maine — Despite suffering a loss Friday evening to end the regular season, the Houlton-Hodgdon-GHCA football squad was able to secure the sixth and final playoff spot in Class D north.

The Shires (3-5) travel to No. 3 Mattanawcook Academy (5-3) of Lincoln Friday evening for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal contest. The two teams met Sept. 15 during the regular season, with MA pulling away in the second half to secure a 40-20 victory.

In that game, Houlton played well in the first half, trailing just 28-14 at the intermission. MA outscored the Shires 12-6 in the second half to pull away for the win.

Houlton senior running back Seth Holston was one of the bright stars for the Shires in that game as the talented senior rumbled to 237 yards on 27 carries (8.8 yards per carry), including a long run of 61 yards. He finished with one touchdown on the evening.

At home last Friday, the Shires fell 41-28 to Dexter. Individual results from that game were not available by presstime.
