HOULTON, Maine — Auditions for “The Enchanted Bookshop,” the 2018 spring production of Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 9, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the Houlton Wesleyan Church.

The auditions are open to children in grades 3-6, and there is no cost to participate. A parent or adult should accompany the child to assist with the registration form, but does not need to stay; children should not arrive before 2:45 p.m.

Rehearsals for “The Enchanted Bookshop,” directed by Gary Farnham, will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., at the Wesleyan Church, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Play performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7, at the Houlton Community Arts Center.

In “The Enchanted Bookshop,” a comedy written by Todd Wallinger and published by Pioneer Drama Service, such literary characters as Robin Hood, Dorothy, Tom Sawyer, Sherlock Holmes and Heidi come alive at night and try to save a struggling bookstore. With characters that include a scatterbrained store owner, a pair of smugglers, and guest appearances by other book personalities, the play is a celebration of the magic and joy of reading in a fresh, fun-filled way.

Houlton Star Bright Children’s Theatre, a nonprofit volunteer organization, is celebrating its 50th year of continuous production of plays performed “for children, by children.” Dedicated to giving young people drama experience both on stage and behind the scenes, it is one of the oldest community children’s theatres in the country.
