MONROE, Maine — Jonathan Fulford, candidate for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, signed the American Promise pledge to end the influence of big money and special interests in campaigns and elections on March 6.

Fulford said: “People feel like they don’t have a voice in Washington anymore. It’s why I created the Pine Tree Pledge and asked all candidates for federal office to sign it. I am taking the additional step of signing the American Promise because working Mainers deserve a representative who will work for them.  We need to get special interest money out of our campaigns and elections and restore a government of, for and by the people. That’s why I’m proud to pledge to use my office, if elected, to do everything I can to put ‘We the People’ first.”

Fulford pledged, if elected, to use his office to advance an amendment to the United States Constitution to “secure fair, free elections by limiting the undue influence of money in politics; protect the rights of all Americans to equal participation and representation rather than the over representation of multi-national corporations, their lobbyists and special interests.”

19 states and over 800 cities and towns, including several in Maine, have passed resolutions with support from Republicans, Democrats, and independents formally calling on Congress to amend the U.S. Constitution to limit the influence of money in politics.  In Montana, Colorado, California, and Washington voters have approved similar resolutions through ballot initiatives. Multiple versions of amendments have been proposed in Congress, with more than 40 co-sponsors in the U.S. Senate and 150 co-sponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Jonathan Fulford has a construction company in Maine’s 2nd District. Prior to starting his own home building business, Fulford was a farmer.  He is running on a platform that creates an economy that works for everyone, providing all Americans with high quality health care and working to reduce the effects of climate change.
