NORTHBOROUGH, Massachusetts — The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team is now 1-11 after losing both ends of a doubleheader played Sunday against Anna Maria College of Paxton, Massachusetts, at the New England Baseball Complex.
The Owls lost the first game, 4-1, before being edged in the second, 6-5.
Anna Maria scored all four of its runs in the first inning in the opener. Defense and strong pitching by both teams prevailed the rest of the way. UMPI’s only run was scored when Matt Curry doubled home Matt Cauchon in the top of the sixth.
Curry gave up two earned runs in the complete-game performance. He allowed 11 hits and struck out four batters.
In the second matchup, the Owls plated an unearned run in the first before the Cats tallied four runs over the next two frames to go on top.
UMPI rallied in the top of the fifth with four unearned runs. Ryan Sanderson had the big hit in the inning. The Cats came back for two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a walk-off double by Nick Genatossi to earn the triumph.
Tyler McLaughlin started on the mound for the Owls, but Sanderson suffered the loss.
UMPI will next take on Rivier University of Nashua, New Hampshire, Friday in a doubleheader to be played, beginning at 11 a.m., in Lynn, Massachusetts.
