PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The SAD 1 Presque Isle Career and Technical Center has announced a dual-enrollment opportunity for students in the drafting and engineering technology program.

As a result of a collaboration between the University of Maine College of Engineering, Bridge Year Educational Services Inc. and the PIRCTC, beginning in fall of 2018 students enrolled in the the drafting and engineering technology program will be able to earn college credit for the Maine College of Engineering course MEE-120 (dengineering graphics and computer aided design).

Since 2014, 13 PIRCTC graduates have been accepted into the Maine College of Engineering, majoring in mechanical engineering technology, mechanical engineering and chemical engineering. Other drafting and engineering graduates are pursuing degrees in marine engineering, industrial design and precision machine at various post-secondary institutions.

This opportunity is the first such agreement between the University of Maine College of Engineering and a high school level program, and will provide an enhanced pathway for SAD 1 students desiring to pursue an engineering degree through the University of Maine.

The two-year PIRCTC drafting and engineering program provides area high school students with computer-aided design and solid modeling skills using state-of-the art software and technology. They also learn fundamentals of engineering and architecture, education and career paths, additive manufacturing (3D printing), and CNC technology through classroom, lab and applied learning opportunities.

Instructors for the course will be Eric Martin, MS, lecturer of mechanical engineering at the University of Maine, and Terry Harper, instructor of drafting and engineering technology at the Presque Isle center.
