HOULTON, Maine — As local students look ahead to the start of the fall semester, those planning to move away to college may be reconsidering their choices.
According to Tracy Rockwell, director of the Houlton Higher Education Center, this is the time of year when she starts hearing from students that they may be deciding not to attend the college they had originally planned on.
“Tuition bills start coming in and there are many decisions to make,” Rockwell said. “Students begin to realize that they may not be ready to go away, and so they start exploring local options.”
Economic and emotional decisions become real in August, and Rockwell added that her staff is happy to help folks find the right path.
University classes through the University of Maine at Presque Isle, as well as University of Maine at Augusta, are held locally at HHEC for several degree programs, such as business, education, social work, mental health and human services, justice studies, liberal studies, psychology, and more.
Rockwell noted there are scholarship opportunities for first-time college students, returning students and other forms of financial aid through the normal FAFSA process.
