Caribou hosting special “Sunday on Sweden” for BikeMaine

CARIBOU, Maine –In honor of BikeMaine visiting central and northern Aroostook County this year, the City of Caribou will be hosting cyclists on Sept. 9 with a special “Sunday on Sweden” event that city Marketing and Event Coordinator Christina Kane-Gibson said is going to be like “Thursdays on Sweden,” but even bigger.

Sunday is going to be massive,” she said. “We’re branding it like a Thursdays on Sweden event, but it’s really going to be its own beast. We rented out the movie theater, we’ll have snow plows, groomers, logging trucks, and Sen. Susan Collins here.”

The event is slated to feature three acts on stage, a 5 p.m. “Wildlife Encounters” event courtesy of the City of Caribou and the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge, a 6 p.m. performance from the Aroostook Band of Micmacs Mawitanej Ep’itijig drum group, and a performance from La Recolte, a band from Acadiana, Louisiana, that specializes in traditional Cajun French music.

Kane-Gibson said she is working directly with the City of Lafayette, Louisiana, in organizing the event, and said the French Cajun theme will coincide with the French Canadian theme of BikeMaine’s trek to the St. John Valley.

Before moving back to her hometown of Caribou, Kane-Gibson lived in Texas and said she would frequently visit Louisiana.

“You really feel at home there,” she said. “The band hooked me up with the Lafayette tourism office, which is how we made the connection.

A few lucky guests at Sundays on Sweden will even be eligible to win a trip to Lafayette for a cycling event, and the city is sending a number of prizes and gifts to Caribou.

“It’s going to be a massive, special edition of Thursdays on Sweden,” Kane-Gibson said of the upcoming event.
