UMPI Owls defeat Clipper hoop squads

The University of Maine at Presque Isle basketball teams ended the fall semester in a positive way, with both the women and men defeating UM-Machias in home games Friday.

The Owl women needed two overtime periods, but defeated the Clippers, 66-63. Sara Musselman scored six of her 11 points after regulation and dished out six assists in the contest for UMPI. Kendra Silvers hit a game-tying shot with 46 seconds left in regulation, while Musselman’s driving layup forced the second OT session and her jumper 13 seconds in gave UMPI the lead for good.

Marissa Dalvidia Reagle scored 15 points to go along with six rebounds, five steals and four assists to lead 5-4 UMPI. Rhylee Wright tallied 12 points and grabbed 16 boards for the Owls, while Emmy Churchill added 11 points.

Raegene Womack had 27 points and 15 rebounds and Tate Dolley netted 16 points and also had 15 rebounds for UM-Machias, whose record fell to 6-6.

The UMPI men trailed in the first half before going on a 24-12 run to go into intermission with a six-point lead.

The Owls started the second half with a 28-8 outburst to secure the victory. Shyquinn Dix scored 15 points, while Will Griffiths added 14, including a pair of dunks in the second half, to go along with nine rebounds for 6-5 UMPI. DeAndre Duncombe notched 13 points in the win.

Dante Ramos poured in 26 points for UMM, now 4-9.

The UMPI teams have a long layoff before resuming their season Jan. 4 and 5 with home games against Husson University.
