Weather causes changes to sports schedule

Cold temperatures on Saturday and the predicted heavy snows on Sunday have altered the upcoming varsity ski schedule in Aroostook County, while also affecting Monday’s sports schedule.

Saturday’s alpine meet at Lonesome Pine Trails in Fort Kent has been cancelled due to sub-zero degree temperatures expected that day. A makeup date has not yet been announced.

Fort Kent also was supposed to host Nordic freestyle and classic races Monday morning, but due to the anticipated snowstorm, that meet also has been postponed until the following afternoon, Jan. 22.

The alpine meet scheduled at Bigrock in Mars Hill Monday has been moved to Thursday, Jan. 24, beginning at 4 p.m. These will be giant slalom races only.

There also is a wrinkle in the schedule for Monday’s basketball games at Presque Isle High School against Hermon. The junior varsity games have been cancelled and the varsity games have been moved back and will now be played beginning at 4 p.m. with the girls’ contest. The boys’ game will follow at 5:30 p.m.

The Houlton girls versus Southern Aroostook game slated for Monday also has been pushed back. That game will now be played Monday evening with 5:30 p.m. (junior varsity) and 7 p.m. (varsity) tip offs.

The Presque Isle hockey team’s game at Kennebec in Waterville has been postponed with a makeup date still to be determined.

Monday’s Caribou at Washington Academy JV and varsity basketball games are still on as scheduled, beginning at noon. If they do get moved from that day, the new date will be Tuesday, Jan. 22, with the varsity teams only playing at 4 p.m. (girls) and 5:30 p.m. (boys).

The Central Aroostook at Easton boys’ varsity basketball game is still on for Monday at 7 p.m.
