Cole explodes for 46 in Bengal win

The University of Maine at Fort Kent may have lost its first meeting of the season against Aroostook County rival UM-Presque Isle, but Chance Cole made sure the rematch had a different outcome.

The junior from Los Angeles tallied 46 points in the Bengals’ 78-52 win at Wieden Gymnasium Tuesday. Cole played all 40 minutes and connected on 15 of his 29 field goal attempts, including a 6-for-13 performance on 3-pointers. He was successful on 10 of 13 free throws and added seven rebounds and four steals.

Teammate Jarid Walton added 17 points for the winners, who improved to 10-17 on the season.

Wiburn Griffiths scored 15 points and Shyquinn Dix contributed 10 for the 11-14 Owls, who had beaten UMFK in the first meeting between the two teams, 80-70, on Dec. 12 in Fort Kent.

In the women’s game that followed, UMPI led by a point at intermission before the Bengals took control to beat the Owls 69-45. Trinity Washington scored 16 points and Tajaheray McMahan netted 13 for 21-5 UMFK. Sara Mussleman and Rhylee Wright led the Owls (9-16) with 12 points each.
