SAGE announces spring kick-off and courses

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Seniors Achieving Greater Education (SAGE) will kick off its spring session on Friday, March 22, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Campus Center.

Coffee, tea and muffins will be served beginning at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome to meet members and volunteers and hear from instructors about the courses and classes they will be leading this spring.

SAGE is a Special Program of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where most classes are held.

SAGE welcomes intellectually curious adults, age 50 and above, with a desire to learn in the company of others in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere, to discover new ideas about the world and themselves. There are no grades and no tests. Learning and connecting with others is its own reward.

Would you like to learn about Astronomy, Greek Culture, Living Healthy with Chronic Conditions, Theatre Arts Appreciation or even Veterinary Medicine? Have you ever wanted to explore a variety of TED Talks, or delve into Finding Your Ancestors? What about some local history? Learn about local Victorian Houses or the History of Phrenology.

Courses for fun will include Let’s Go to the Movies, Escape Room, SAGE Night Out and a variety of SAGE groups, including Games, Book, Outing and Chess Clubs.

Ever wanted to try a new craft? How about Learning to Knit a Hat, Flower Arranging, creating Altered Bowls, or work on SAGE entries in the UMPI Trash to Fashion Show?

What about physical fitness and activity? There’s Water Fitness in the Gentile Pool, Walking for your Health and Fun, and the very popular A Matter of Balance.

The SAGE Outing Club will also offer several opportunities in partnership with the Caribou Recreation Department for a number of excursions.

Annual membership in SAGE is $25. Courses are $5 each for members, though some hands-on courses and activities have additional fees. Thanks to generous donors, membership scholarships and free bus tickets are offered to SAGE courses for members within ARTS bus routes.
