NEW LIMERICK, Maine — A group of just 13 New Limerick residents turned out Monday, March 25, to approve a municipal spending plan for the town.
The town’s budget of $390,520 for 2019 is an increase of $12,405 (3.2 percent) over the previous plan. According to Town Manager Judy Nightingale, the increase is due to a rise in fire protection costs and general government expenses.
The fire protection account increased to $95,724 this year, a jump of $1,776. New Limerick contracts its fire protection with the Houlton Fire Department. The town will appropriate the same amount of money for winter road maintenance ($84,700) and roads and bridges ($65,000) as was budgeted last year.
The town saw slight decreases for the Houlton Humane Society ($2,309, down $256) and the Cary Library ($2,171, down $44).
Jared Hand was re-elected to the SAD 70 school board, while Paul Harrison was re-elected to the town’s board of selectmen.
