Cougars avenge only loss with win over Southern Aroostook

DYER BROOK, Maine — The Katahdin softball team exacted a bit of revenge on its rival Southern Aroostook Wednesday afternoon with an impressive 11-2 victory on the diamond.

For the Cougars of Stacyville, Wednesday’s game was redemption for a 5-2 loss to Southern Aroostook on May 13. Each team has now lost only once on the season.

As of Thursday afternoon, Southern Aroostook sports a 9-1 record and was ranked fourth in the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Points standings for Class D North, while Katahdin sits at 8-1 and is ranked third in the region. The two teams could very well meet a third time in the upcoming playoffs.

In Wednesday’s game, the Cougars received a strong pitching performance from junior Lily Cullen, who had six strikeouts on the day. She also helped her cause by lacing a pair of singles in the contest.

Katahdin senior Erin Lake had the hot bat for the day as she blasted a two-run home run and added a double and single. Other Cougar hitters were Lindsey Drew (triple), Jordyn Gardner (2 singles) and Maizy Cullen, Emma McNally, Makayla Hartsgrove, Kayla Parsons and Shelby Lewis each with one single.

Senior Kylie Vining struck out five inside the pitching circle for Southern Aroostook. Emma Nadeau had two singles, while Paige Vose, Alexis Hartin, Alexa Merry and Ester Green each had one single.

In the baseball contest, Katahdin rolled to a 15-4, five-inning victory over the Warriors. Katahdin is now 6-3 on the season and ranked sixth in Class D North, while Southern Aroostook is 5-5 and 12th in the region. Both squads are in the playoff mix.
