PATTEN, Maine — Members of Katahdin High School’s National Society and their advisor, Rowena Harvey, met on Saturday, May 24, to fill 24 barrels with geraniums and petunias that are placed beneath the flags along Main Street.

Local businesses and individuals paid for the flowers and soil for the students to fill the barrels and place along the street. Contributors are the following: Katahdin Valley Health Center, Ellis Family Market, Patten Drug, Town of Patten, Katahdin Trust Company, National Honor Society of Katahdin High School, Patten Historical Society, Green Valley Association in memory of Brian Wing, Barbara (Fogg) Edwards in memory of Mickey and Louise Fogg, Cindy Lawler in memory of Colleen Martin, David Michaud in memory of Vera Finch, Rae Bates and Barbara (Fogg) Edwards in memory of Vicky Bates, Dr. Ron Blum and Mary Lou Evitts, Richard and Eryn Schmidt, Virginia Richardson, Steve and Vicky Richardson, Rowena Harvey, and Rae Bates. Richardson’s Greenhouse also places barrels in each side of their business.

Green Valley Association (GVA) and consumers water the barrels every week during the summer until the barrels are emptied in the fall. Without the watering being done by GVA consumers, this project would not be possible. Anyone interested in contributing to the project can contact Jeff Hamm, executive director of GVA, at 463-2156.
