MARS HILL, Maine — The town of Mars Hill is getting ready for its homecoming celebration Aug. 7-11, complete with concerts, class reunions, craft fairs, a marathon and soccer tournament.
The Mars Hill Homecoming Days is a way for the Mars Hill community to celebrate summer and the town’s people, said David Collins, Mars Hill’s recreation director.
“It’s got all kinds of events for everybody from little kids all the way up to senior citizens,” he said.
This year’s event kicks off at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, with a youth bike parade at the Northern Light Continuing Care center, where a free ice cream social will be held the next evening at the same time.
Friday’s events take place at the Mars Hill Fire Station, starting with supper prepared by the Mars Hill Rotary Club, a paint and sip and a drive-in showing of the movie “Ralph Breaks the Internet.”
Homecoming Days will hold a parade at 11 a.m. Saturday through through downtown Mars Hill.
Saturday’s events take place at Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School, and include seven class reunions for high school classes going back to 1954.
Other events Saturday include a junior high soccer tournament with 10 different school teams, a craft and food fair in the parking lot, an antique car show, watermelon and mashed potato eating contests, music by the Star City Syndicate and a country block party at Timberwolves Restaurant with singer Tim Woods.
Sunday’s events feature a gospel concert at the town bandstand, a half-marathon around Bigrock Mountain and an alumni golf scramble at the Mars Hill Country Club.
“There should be something for everyone,” Collins said.
