From the Bunkers – Week of August 5, 2019

HOULTON, Maine — The weather has blessed us once again this week. Dry, warm temperatures made it great for golf. The golf course is doing well, although it is really drying out. Rain predicted for later this week will be welcomed. Our greens are still very receptive and players will get a little extra distance with the firm fairways.

The Men’s Twilight League is moving along through the season. After last week’s matches, the team of Bob Gray and Jerry York are starting to pull away from the field. The Junior Golf clinic continues tomorrow. Please be patient with our future golfers while they are on the course. Tuesday evening, the Ladies Association will be on the course with another exciting game. Play is open to all women who enjoy the game with a little old fashioned fellowship.

Coming up this weekend is the 30th Annual County Open. This will be an 18-hole stroke play tournament held at Houlton Community Golf Course on Saturday. That will be followed by a Gala Dinner that night catered by the Lakeside Restaurant. Sunday will be an 18-hole, four-person team scramble at VaJoWa Golf Course in Island Falls.

There is still room on the tee sheets, so call Lori Weston at 521-2147 to sign up for either tournament. Proceeds will benefit the Health Services Foundation at Houlton Regional Hospital. Sign up sheets are up for the Club Championship/Presidents Cup Tournament to be held on Aug. 17 and 18. This is a two-day tournament with two tournaments running simultaneously. The Club Championship tends to benefit the lower handicap players, while the Presidents Cup is more for the higher handicap players.

Entry is open to all members and is a great way to meet new friends to play with. Sign up sheets are also on the board for the Babe Caron Memorial Tournament. We are looking for thirty two person teams, so get your team on the list as soon as possible. The tournament is Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

The Lakeside Restaurant is serving excellent food Wednesday through Sunday. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and Sunday Brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It’s a beautiful location on Nickerson Lake, so call Nancy at 694-9494 to make your reservations.

Come on out to the course this week and enjoy a round. Nine holes or eighteen, you will enjoy the time. Your course is in great shape, so come on down and we hope to see you on the course.

Houlton Community Golf Course is located on 6 Country Club Drive in New Limerick. For more information on the course call 532-2662, email houltongolf@gmail.com or visit their website www.houltongolf.com.
