Local students earn $500 golf scramble scholarships

CARIBOU, Maine — The fifth annual Jarret “Jerry” McLaughlin Memorial Scramble was played on Aug. 24 at the Caribou Country Club, and two local students will benefit from the event.

McLaughlin was an avid golfer who loved helping kids, and in particular, those who were passionate about the sport of golf.  He was a longtime member of the CCC. When he passed away, his family initiated the Memorial Scramble and established two annual $500 scholarships to high school seniors who are members of the golfing community, either with the varsity golf team or within the CCC family of golfers.

This year’s recipients are Seth Roy of Presque Isle and Gabe Rand of Caribou.

Roy has just started college at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where he will major in business administration.  He was a four-year member of the golf team, an all-Aroostook selection, and the low average scorer last season.

Rand has just started college at Husson, where he will major in business administration.  He was a four-year member of the golf team, an all Aroostook selection, team captain, and state individual qualifier.

McLaughlin’s wife, Janet McLaughlin, along with their daughter, Andrea McLaughlin-Dumais, and Caribou Country Club youth golf chairman Marc Weeks presented the scholarships during the opening ceremony of the Memorial Scramble.

In addition to the scholarships, the McLaughlin family presented three sets of new junior golf clubs to the youth golf program. which helps bridge a gap in size- and age-appropriate equipment for Caribou’s youth golf program.

Country Club officials also announced that the board of directors has approved a memorial tree and plaque in McLaughlin’s name, which will be purchased and installed on the course early next spring.
