Retired teachers elect officers, discuss SAGE

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook Retired Educators Association met on Aug. 27 at the Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center.  

After the opening ceremonies, Brian Mosher provided music during the buffet luncheon.

Following the luncheon, President Rena Kearney introduced Penny Kern, the chairman of the board of directors for the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Seniors Achieving Greater Education (SAGE).  She, in turn, introduced Susanne Sandusky, the publicity person for SAGE, who explained the value of SAGE, the cost of the programs and the registration process. AREA members were also encouraged to become instructors/presenters.

Special guest Diane Leighton was recognized for her service to AREA through the Maine Education Association office in Caribou.  She was presented with tokens of appreciation from the group and from MEA-R. Pam Craig, who replaces Leighton, was introduced to the group. 

During the business meeting, the slate of officers was presented for the final vote.  The new officers will be: Rena Kearney, past president; Ben Paradis, president; Roger Roy, VICE PREsident; Bob Souther, treasurer; Dave Madore, assistant treasurer; Linda Hawkins-Pelletier, corresponding secretary; and Betsy York, recording secretary.  

The installation of officers will take place at the final summer meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Caribou Inn and Convention Center.
