Anonymous donor helps Presque Isle food pantry feed the hungry

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Charlene Buzza, Grace Interfaith Food Table director of volunteers, was pleasantly surprised one recent day to receive a phone call from Sherry Locke, executive director of United Way of Aroostook, saying a donation had come through United Way for G.I.F.T.

“This donation helps us keep the doors open and able to feed hundreds of hungry people every month,” said Buzza. “We’re able to use this money to do important work.”

The donor wished to remain anonymous, but told the United Way they admired the work G.I.F.T. does and the impact it has on hunger in Central Aroostook. The donor realizes  most large donations and grants come with stipulations that sometimes tie the hands of the receiving organization, so this donation came with no such stipulations. The Pantry can use it in a manner that will best help its mission to feed people.

The donor also hopes to increase awareness of the need to support local organizations working to improve the lives of people living in Aroostook County, United Way officials said, adding that any donation to organizations doing this great work is valued, no matter the amount.

Buzza reported the pantry serves 120 households each month. Clients must qualify for TEFAP (Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program) to be able to get food from the pantry. The pantry serves Presque Isle, Chapman, Castle Hill, Mapleton, Crouseville and other communities as necessary.

G.I.F.T. was originally started by Sister Mary O’Donnell and became incorporated in 2003. It is a registered 501 (c) (3). They have a board made up of representatives from the four churches which help to support the pantry.

Persons interested in receiving services should call 207-764-8584 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesdays to obtain information or make an appointment. They service approved clients on four Wednesdays a month.
