HES second graders hike Riverfront Trail

HOULTON, Maine — Second-graders at Houlton Elementary School had the opportunity to go exploring on the new Riverfront Walking Trails in Houlton on Monday, Sept. 30.

Students have been discussing the theme of exploring in their reading curriculum, and teachers felt this field trip was a good way to bring a hands-on approach to the students’ learning.

According to teacher Lauren Fitzpatrick, children kept nature journals making notations about animals, trees, soil and the land.  Students also enjoyed reading and studying the information on the plaques along the trail.

“The RSU29 word of the year is ‘Grit’ and students had to show some grit to walk the three mile loop,” Fitzpatrick said.
