CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Vikings faced off against the Brewer Witches last Friday night, securing a 4-2 victory for the boys team and a 3-0 loss for the girls team.

The Caribou squad came out strong, putting immediate pressure on Brewer, breaking through with their first goal of the game with just over eight minutes elapsed,” said Caribou High School Athletic Director Evan Graves. “Ethan Holdsworth was able to get on the end of a beautiful pass from Alex Bouchard and push the ball past the Brewer keeper for the score. The Vikings struck again seven minutes later when Holdsworth took a pass from Carter Belanger and struck a shot that found its way between the keepers legs and into the net.”

The Vikings maintained a 2-0 lead until Witches’ Brady Saunders scored a shot from about 25 yards away with just five minutes remaining in the first half.

The Vikings quickly regained their two-goal lead 15 minutes into the second half, Graves said.

“Ethan Holdsworth tallied the hat trick with a goal directly off a corner kick,” Graves said, adding that this was Holdsworth’s 24th goal of the season.

Brewer answered by scoring on their own corner kick.

This prompted the boys to go back on the offensive and, with seven minutes left, Riley Bouchard headed in a corner from Ethan Holdsworth, giving the Vikings a 4-2 lead as well as their ninth victory of the season.

Graves referred to Hayden Hunter and Cullin Caverhill as “Caribou’s dynamic midfield duo,” adding that they “worked tirelessly throughout the contest controlling the midfield play for the Vikings.

While the Caribou girls lost the game against Brewer by 3-0, Graves said the game was “much closer than the score may indicate.”

“The Vikings held a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal,” he said, “but just could not get the ball past Brewer’s outstanding keeper. The Witches held a 1-0 lead at halftime, then scored twice more in the opening eight minutes of the second half to secure the victory.”

The Vikings traveled to Foxcroft Academy on Columbus Day before their Thursday match against the Presque Isle Wildcats, and will return home on Oct. 19 to host the John Bapst Crusaders at 3:30 p.m..
