High School sports season returns

HOULTON, Maine — A flurry of basketball games is in store as the winter sports season tips off Friday, Dec. 6 for local high school squads.

Teams have been busy squeezing in practices and scrimmages around the Thanksgiving recess to prepare for the new season.

The Southern Aroostook boys basketball team kicks off the new season Friday, Dec. 6 at 5 p.m. hosting Washburn, with the girls squad embarking on its Class D state title defense against the Beavers at 6:30 p.m.

In other games opening night, Madawaska travels to Hodgdon for a girls and boys double bill starting at 5:30 p.m.; the Katahdin girls head to Ashland at 5:30 p.m. while the Cougar boys host Fort Fairfield at 6:30 p.m.; the Greater Houlton Christian Academy boys trek to Ashland for a 7 p.m. tipoff.; and Central Aroostook girls travel to Van Buren at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, Houlton starts its season new season competing in Class B North by hosting Mount Desert Island, with the boys game 3 p.m. followed by the girls at 4:30 p.m.; Fort Fairfield girls host Woodland at 2:30 p.m.; Caribou travels to Orono with the girls playing at 12:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 3:30 p.m.; and Presque Isle hosts Old Town, girls at 3 p.m. and boys at 4:30 p.m.

In hockey, Camden Hills comes to the County for matches with Presque Isle (Friday at 6:30 p.m.) and Houlton (Saturday at 1 p.m.)

The Caribou wrestling team hits the mat Saturday in Bucksport for a meet with Calais, Dexter, MA, PCHS and the Golden Bucks starting  at 10 a.m.
