Southern Aroostook girls ready to defend crown

DYER BROOK, Maine — Girls basketball season began with a bang Friday evening as the two-time defending state champ — Southern Aroostook — already appears to be firing on all cylinders.

The Warriors blasted their way to an impressive 80-12 victory over Washburn, with nearly every member of the SA roster getting involved in the scoring action.

SA received an added boost to its roster late last week with the return of Kacy Daggett to the team. Daggett had been attending classes at Oceanside School in Rockland this past fall, but transferred back home to Dyer Brook following Thanksgiving break.

The Warriors bolted to a 30-0 lead at the end of the first quarter that ballooned to 49-0 by halftime. SA led 64-6 after three periods.

Freshman Maddie Russell led the Warriors with 15 points, followed by eighth-grader Maddie Shields with nine points, while eighth-grader Lexi Rackliff chipped in eight points. Makaelyn Porter and Callie Russell both had six points, Emma Nadeau, Selena Botting and Daggett each had four points, while Jennah Brooks added three points and Paige Vose Emmalee Landry had two and Bre Dagget added one.

For Washburn, Kylie Farley had five points, Raegyn Chavez added four points, Emily Jackson had two and Emerson Turner had one.

Katahdin 44, Ashland 21 — At Ashland Friday night, the visiting Cougars received a 13-point effort from Danielle Libby, while Makayla Harstgrove added 11 and Emily Beyer chipped in nine as Katahdin rolled past Ashland. Mary Cullen scored six points for Katahdin, with Autumn McGraw and Lilly Cullen each adding two and Izzy Browlee one.

For Ashland, Danni Carter tossed in 10 points, Hailee Cunningham had five, Willow Hall four and Jamie Poulin two.

Katahdin led 12-1, 27-5 and 40-7 at the quarter breaks.

Houlton 48, MDI 43 — At Houlton Saturday, the Shires held off visiting Mount Desert Island of Bar Harbor in the season-opener. Teagan Ewings led the Shires with 18 points, while Olivia Henderson added 10, Mia Henderson had nine and Becca Howe chipped in eight. Individual results for MDI were not reported.
