75 Years Ago –  April 12, 1945

Edmund Beaulieu guest speaker at Lions — Edmund Beaulieu, president of the Presque Isle Merchants Association, spoke to the Presque Isle Lions Club meeting.

The highlight of Beaulieu’s talk was the proposed Chamber of Commerce. President William Hummer and Secretary John Pasqual represented the Club at the quarterly zone meeting in Easton.

50 Years Ago –  April 15, 1970

Aroostocrats given surprise party — A “Surprise Party” was given the District 7 Quartet champs by the Presque Isle Chapter of the SPEBQSA. The party was in honor of the local quartet’s outstanding achievement at the St. John, New Brunswick, District final held April 4. The “Aroostoocrats,” featuring Dick Baird of Presque Isle as lead; Dick Barker of Easton as tenor; Art Aube of Presque Isle as baritone; and Bob Cormier of Presque Isle as bass. They took first place in the district finals and thrilled the St. John crowd of 600 with their display of vocal blend and stage presence.

Winners all — Members of the Kiwanis Club of Presque Isle were the winning team in the Dollars For Scholars round-robin basketball game played Friday night. The Kiwanians defeated the Lions and Rotary teams in what turned out to be a well played series. $190 plus was raised for the Dollars for Scholars campaign by the efforts of these men. The winning team consisted of Mel Hovey, Al Condon, Arthur Shields, Gene Michaud, Louis Pepin, Charles Eber, Norman Varnum, Richard Hawkins, Dave Griffiths, Ronald Carmichael, and team manager, Vaughn Lamoreau. 

25 Years Ago –  April 12, 1995

Superintendent honored — SAD 42 Superintendent Mark Eastman was honored with a legislative sentiment from representative Richard Kneeland. Eastman was recognized for his dedication to the education system and for his role as president of the Maine Superintendents Association and was also named Superintendent of the Year.

Arndt chosen conservation director — Central Aroostook Soil & Water Conservation District’s Board of Supervisors chose a new Executive Director, Kenneth C. Arndt of Presque Isle. Jon Durepo, chairman of the board, announced the hiring at the board’s monthly meeting on March 23, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge in the project areas in which the District is involved.
