PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Maine Campus Compact, a coalition of 18 member campuses who want to reinvigorate the civic mission of higher education, has named University Credit Union the 2020 Corporate Partner of the Year for contributions made to the University of Maine at Presque Isle, a member campus.

The local branch of UCU is located on the UMPI campus. The compact announced the recognition during its virtual 2020 awards ceremony.

The MCC Corporate Partner of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding organization and staff for model partnership with a Maine Campus Compact member institution. MCC members include the campus presidents of the University of Maine System, University of New England, Kennebec Valley Community College, Southern Maine Community College, Unity College, St. Joseph’s College, Maine College of Art, Purdue University Global, Husson University, Colby College, Bowdoin College and Bates College.

“The University Credit Union support of University of Maine at Presque Isle students in the area of financial literacy, and their financial support of the campus community, has made UCU an outstanding corporate partner,” the MCC stated.

“Over the past five years, UCU has been one of the top supporters of UMPI, providing numerous donations and sponsorships that include the university’s teaching & research greenhouse, basketball scoreboards, new entryway signs, light pole banners, and additional athletic needs. Their commitment to improving the student experience has been second to none.”

Each year, UCU awards a $1,000 scholarship to an UMPI student. UCU has led an annual Ending Hunger on Campus Campaign to raise and match financial donations to campus food pantries throughout the University of Maine System, including the UMPI Emergency Food Pantry. And every day, UCU provides UMPI students and staff with convenient, local access to financial services in person at its on-campus branch in the UMPI Campus Center, online, and on mobile devices.

Gerald “Jerry” Hayman, Jr., board chair of University Credit Union, expressed appreciation for the award on behalf of the entire UCU team.

“Fostering support for students furthering their education in Maine is deep within UCU’s roots. We are honored to invest in our campus communities throughout the state of Maine and help students make the most of their higher education experience,” he said.

Established on the University of Maine campus in 1967, UCU is the sixth largest credit union in Maine in terms of total assets and total members. It has eight retail locations across the state located in Orono, Bangor, Farmington, Gorham, Portland, and Presque Isle.
