From the Bunkers – Week of June 22, 2020

NEW LIMERICK, Maine — Hello friends, looks like summer has arrived. Temperatures are rising and golf is in the air. We’re getting a lot of play and the course is really starting to look good. Our greens are coming, but still a little ragged.

On June 18, we seeded 18 greens again and covered with breathable tarps to help create a greenhouse effect. This should expedite seed germination and get the green back in play sooner. With all this seeding and dry warm conditions, we will be watering all greens throughout the day. Please be patient.

The Golf for Life program is moving from the range to the course over the next couple weeks. We welcome our new players. Members please be considerate of the beginners. We were all there at one point in our playing careers. Junior golf starts this coming Monday morning at 8-11 a.m. at the driving range. Ages 6 through high school will be taught by Dave Grant and assisted by several of his high school golfers. The cost is $45 for the clinic.

Men’s Twilight League had their second week of competition on Monday. Leaders in the clubhouse are Bob Gray and Jerry York in the Koepka Division, and Ben Lynds and Jim Quirk in the Spieth Division. The Ladies Association held its opening tournament on Tuesday. It was a scramble format with 16 players participating.  The winning team was Sarah Moody, Cheryl Quint, Brenda Carmen, and Kayla Martinez. The game was followed by a pizza feed and social time.

We hope you plan to play in the Memorial Scramble on Saturday, June 27, starting at noon. This is an 18-hole, four person format. Call the clubhouse to sign up. A whole team or individuals and we’ll make a team for you. It’s a great time as we honor those members that have passed.

Upcoming tournaments are the Houlton High School Alumni Association nine-hole, four-person scramble on Saturday, July 11. And yes, the County Open is coming on Aug. 8-9. The Open is always a good time and it benefits the Houlton Health Services Foundation. The Babe Caron Memorial Tournament is held over the Labor Day weekend in September.

The Lakeside Restaurant is providing fine dining in the dining room by the lake on the course. Chef Aaron has a few new tasty entrees and some of your old favorites. Call the restaurant at 805-5250 to make your reservations.

Take some time this week to come and play nine holes, enjoy getting out of the house, and of course that exercise that is part of the game of golf. Hopefully I will see you and yours on the course.

Houlton Community Golf Course is located on 6 Country Club Drive in New Limerick. For more information on the course call 532-2662, email houltongolf@gmail.com or visit their website www.houltongolf.com.
