Linneus Recreation Department offers summer programs

LINNEUS, Maine — Summer events will go on as planned in the community of Linneus, thanks to the efforts of the town’s recreation director.

Josh Murchie, who took over the position in the summer of 2019, has set his sights on bringing a number of programs to the town for area youths to enjoy.

“As the new director, I really want to re-establish some of the programs that the town once had,” Murchie said.

Signups for a free skill-building baseball program began Monday or ages 9-14, at the Linneus Baseball field, run by Rita Gardiner. The first practice will be held on Wednesday with practices happening every Monday and Wednesday until July 29. Children are asked to bring something to drink, glove, helmet and bat if possible.

In August, the town will offer a summer soccer program with Dylan Nolan, which is something new for the Linneus Recreation Department. Signups for this six-week program will be Aug. 17, followed by the first practice on Aug. 18 and running every Tuesday and Thursday. The cost for this program is $15, to cover the cost of T-shirts.

“In the past we have held a Linneus Field Day,” Murchie said. “We are discussing ways to still make that happen safely as a way to celebrate the town. There’s been so much let-down, that we think this is important to do. There is so much negativity that we need to find a way to bring people together.”

Linneus Field Day will take place Aug. 29, with a rain date of Sept. 12, at the Linneus baseball field. In the past, this event has featured face painting, children’s games and a large, homemade slip-and-side. A parade is also a possibility, Murchie said, but details have yet to be finalized.
