A happy ending

After our Fourth of July warning about pets and fireworks, we wanted to share a writing from a special lady from Castle Hill.

Elaine Ellis Hotham, 90 years young, has lived in Aroostook County all of her life, and has been writing poetry for as long as she can remember.  During the July 4th fireworks celebration this year, friends of the family had their beloved dog Bayla run off. Bayla went on quite an adventure, but thankfully this story had a happy ending.

Bayla’s Story

by Elaine Ellis Hotham

“I’d like to tell a story, about the time that I was lost.

It was July 4, 2020, at the lake that is named Cross.

“At that lake named Cross, I enjoy the best of days.

Sophie and Cooper were there, and we ran and played all day.

“Yes, I am that little dog that ran away from home.

I couldn’t help but panic when fireworks began to boom.

“Woods loomed around me, and I began to roam.

I traveled far and wide, trying to get back home.

“They searched throughout the night and all of the next day.

They were giving up the search, as the guests drove away,

“When a family on a four-wheeler, on the last ride of the day,

Saw movement in the bushes and found me there that day.

“I wasn’t lost on Mt. Katahdin; I wasn’t swept out to sea.

It was at Cross Lake, where that family rescued me.

“Always and forever grateful, to that family I will be.

“The day I was found was a most special day.

A miracle happened, as there was no other way.

“Yes, it was truly a miracle that I was found that day,

For they had all been praying, so we know who pointed the way.”

All of us at the Central Aroostook Humane Society want to thank Elaine for the wonderful story, and we are so happy that Bayla is home safe and sound.

Please remember to be responsible pet owners — spay and neuter your furry friends.
