HOULTON, Maine — The Katahdin Valley Health Center is one of 18 health centers throughout the state to receive federal funds in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced earlier this week that nearly $4 million had been awarded to Maine health centers to combat COVID-19.

The funds, which were awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration, will be used to address screening and testing needs, acquire medical supplies and boost telehealth capacity in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“The funds allow us to continue to strengthen our quality improvement activities, including maintaining our Patient Centered Medical Home recognition,” said Claudette Humphrey, chief executive officer for KVHC. “The funds also support our Integrated Behavioral Health Services, as the funds have assisted with the hiring of additional mental health personnel.”

Katahdin Valley Health Center received $320,521 from the grant, which was one of the larger amounts given to regional health centers.

“Community health centers are the backbone of Maine’s rural health care system,” Sens. Collins and King said in a joint statement. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, these medical providers are needed now more than ever. This important funding will assist health centers throughout Maine as they continue to care for COVID-19 patients in their communities.”
