PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Country Club hosted Caribou, Houlton and Presque Isle Thursday, in what was the first home match for the Wildcats this year.

Twenty-six players from three Aroostook County high schools teed off against one another. In the three matches of the day, Presque Isle beat Caribou and Houlton, while Caribou defeated Houlton. Presque Isle led with a 186, while Caribou was a close second at 188 and Houlton was 194.

Presque Isle’s Ian MacKinnon was the medalist of the day, leading all golfers as he shot a 34. Carter Quist led Caribou with a score of 45 and Collin Moody led Houlton with 43. It was the third meet for Presque Isle’s squad this year as the Wildcats began the season in Caribou Sept. 18 before heading to Houlton Sept. 22.

Speaking before the match, Peter Coffin, who is in his second year coaching Presque Isle, said he was happy just to be there on the course. Because of the pandemic, there had been questions about whether fall sports would occur this year. The Maine Principals Association is allowing individual school districts to choose if they want to field teams.

“It’s just great that kids are getting the opportunity to play,” Coffin said.

Several players wore masks as they practiced before the match, though few kept them on while teeing off, as has become common in sports since the pandemic began.

Individual Presque Isle results were: MacKinnon, 41; Ben Duprey, 45; Jack Boone, 46; Noah Roy, 49; Owen MacKinnon, 51; Hunter Stubbs, 51; Gavin Dunleavy, 52; and Jackson Maynard, 53.

Individual Caribou results were: Quist, 45; Brevin Barnes, 47; Miles Collier, 48; Sawyer Deprey, 48; Lars Spooner, 52; Cory Herbert, 53; Keegan Bell, 59; and Jayden Fournier, 66.

Individual Houlton results were: Moody, 43; Garrett Harvey, 44; Alyssa Nightingale, 52; Kollin Irish, 55; Tom Wilcox, 55; Madalyn Quirk, 56; Abby Fitzpatrick, 57; and Silas Nadeau, 62.
