CARIBOU, Maine — The city of Caribou recently listed the winners of its annual Halloween decorating contest, an event that encouraged residents and businesses to decorate their properties while also keeping social distancing guidelines in mind.

The contest was held for the first half of October, and was made possible via partnership with the city, REMAX North, and the Par & Grill restaurant. It featured two categories; residential and business, with prizes in each category being a $100 gift card to the restaurant.

The contest also featured a scavenger hunt, with the city providing clues for residents to drive around and solve a puzzle based on the decorated properties.

The judges choice was a home on 83 Collins St. The winner in the business category was Goughan’s Berry Farm and the residential placements were: 3 Mckinley St. in first place, 46 Collins St. in second and 284 Washburn St. in third.

In addition to encouraging people to dress up their properties for the Halloween season, votes were also counted by a donation of canned food, with each canned good counting as one vote. All food donations were given to Catholic Charities Maine after the winners were announced on Oct. 30.

Caribou Marketing and Events Coordinator Christina Kane-Gibson said the event featured eight participants, and that it would not have been possible without the help of the sponsors.

“I think this is one of those events that we can do while we socially distance, and it still gives people a chance to get out of their house and do something that’s safe and fun for the family,” she said.

She said the city is working out the details of hosting a similar event in December that would feature Christmas decorations.
