100 Years Ago – Aug.  18, 1921

Tickets Officials of Van Buren are out to stop auto speeding. Since the appointment of officers to enforce the speed limit law, the Court of Trial Justice Keegan has been kept pretty busy.

Moving Picture House — The moving picture house of A.P. Libby closes Wednesday evening. Park Theater will then be the only picture house in town. It is reported though that the Fort Fairfield National Bank is planning to have one of the finest theaters in the County in their new brick block to be built on the site of where the old bank is now situated.

75 Years Ago – Aug. 14, 1946

Shortage — Pierson Motor Company ran an ad apologizing for the shortage of Chevrolet automobiles. 

Building Boom — There was a local building boom. A survey made by the AR reported 86 houses have been built this year. New buildings also include eleven potato houses, two warehouses, a creamery and eight garages.

50 Years Ago – Aug  18, 1971

Grant — Caribou received a $40,608 federal grant under the Comprehensive Employment Training Act. The grant money will finance salaries of one police woman, two recreation assistants, a welfare clerk, and two men for the public works department.

New Hire The Caribou Police Department announced that they have hired Loretta McNamme, who is the first full time uniformed woman to work for the local agency as far back as officials can recollect.

25 Years Ago – Aug. 14, 1996

VFW Cares About Kids The Caribou VFW Post 9389 recently donated $250 to the Caribou Chamber of Commerce for partial sponsorship of the Rick Charette concert for the Caribou Cares About Kids activities.

Gahagan Recognized Ann Gahagan, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator at Cary Medical Center, was one of three health educators from the State of Maine to have been recently selected to attend “Diabetes Education Recognition Days,” sponsored by Eli Lilly & Company and Boehringer Mannheim Company in Indianapolis. Hre outstanding performance as a diabetes educator brought Gahagan this recognition.
