Washburn boys concentrating on defense during early workouts

WASHBURN, Maine — Ready to embark on his sixth season as the head coach of the Washburn boys basketball team, Michael Hartford has a 10-player roster set to compete for a tournament spot in the Class D North ranks.

Washburn’s starting five includes seniors Beckam Vaughn and Angel Taveras, along with juniors Derek Cruz, Parker Corey and Mitchell Turner.

Vaughn plays forward and center and is a returning three-year starter who averaged 10 points per game a year ago.

“He has a complete game offensively, playing inside and out,” Hartford said. “He will help with ball handling duties a lot this season.”

Taveras, a first-year player, may be the Beavers’ best all-around athlete, according to Hartford.

“Angel is quick and will provide some aggressive defense, help us push an offensive tempo and will help handle the ball as well,” Hartford said.

Cruz is another returning starter who is the squad’s best defender. He can play both forward and guard and has shown an improved offensive game.

Corey will man the post offensively for the Beavers. Hartford said he’s an adept passer, can finish around the basket with contact and can step away and score from the outside.

Turner was an offensive spark off the bench a year ago. He has 3-point range, but can score in other ways too.

Hartford has welcomed senior Adam Boot back in a reserve role after the forward took last year off. Boot provides defensive toughness and rebounding and an improved offensive game.

Sophomore Roegen Rosi-Carney is a first-year guard who brings quickness and the ability to score in transition.

Freshmen Damien Dumont and Jack Tate are other guards, while classmate Hunter Campbell plays in the frontcourt.

Hartford said defense will be the key component for the Beavers throughout the season.

“We have been encouraging solid defensive basics and positioning to be a better team of defenders,” Hartford said. “For us to challenge for a tournament spot, we will need to defend well, minimize turnovers, build some quick chemistry and stay healthy.”

Hartford’s assistant coach is Andrew Churchill and the manager is Caleb Silver.
