115 Years Ago – Jan. 23, 1907

Rollaway Co’s rink — A large crowd was present at the Rollaway Co’s rink last Friday night. In addition to its being the regular band night, the first race of the series, for a medal to be awarded to the winner of two out of three races, was skated.

The race was between Frank McNair and Charles Carpenter, both of Houlton. The race was won by Carpenter, who easily proved himself superior over his opponent.

Basketball — The Ricker Classical Institute basketball team returned Saturday from Washburn where it gained a victory over the strong athletic association team of that town by a score of 26-17.

75 Years Ago – Jan. 23,1947

Local man retires — After 38 years of active business in Houlton, T.V. Holdaway this week announced his retirement and said that the merchandise of his store, the Houlton Meat Supply, had been sold to William Riley. Mr. Holdaway made no announcement of his plans for the future nor could he say what disposition would be made of his store.

Airport news — The Houlton Flying Service flew in six men to Peach Pond Jan. 20, 40 miles west of Portage Lake. These men were successful in salvaging a Piper Cub airplane, which had been forced down on a small beaver pond there. 

50 Years Ago – Jan. 19, 1972

Retiring fire chief – – Essek Smith, who has served as chief of the Sherman Fire Department for 20 years, was honored at a retirement party given by the department and their wives Saturday evening at the Molunkus Stream Fish and Game Clubhouse in Sherman Mills. Mr. Smith was presented a plaque and a decorated cake made by Mrs. Dan Durgan.

Environmental happening – – As part of its January term activities, Ricker College will sponsor an “environmental happening” on the campus this Saturday, according to Richard Sherwood of the Ricker faculty, coordinator for the event. Mr. Sherwood said that details of the program are not being publicized. “Part of the appeal of an event like this lies in not knowing exactly what is going to happen,” he said. 

25 Years Ago – Jan. 29, 1997

Houlton cheering champs  – – A contingent of 17 young ladies from Houlton have accomplished what no other cheerleading squad in the school’s history could do — they captured the Eastern Maine Class B championship cheering trophy. The team blistered their competition with the highest score, of all of the competing classes A-D, with a 75.33.

Lynds named to chair insurance group – – Max Lynds is one of the 60 senior chairmen honored by The Life Underwriter training Council (LUTC) for five years of outstanding service to The council and the community as LUTC Chairman. In recognition of the distinction, he was presented with a plaque by the council.
