Presque Isle girls team wins pair of contests heading into final games

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Wildcats’ girls basketball team won a pair of contests last week to improve to 9-3 heading into its final six games of the regular season.

Presque Isle is ranked sixth in the Class B North standings.

Last Wednesday, Faith Sjoberg hit a 10-foot jumper with five seconds to go in overtime, lifting the Wildcats to a 56-55 win at Houlton.

Sjoberg had tied the game by connecting on a 3-point shot with 10 seconds to go in regulation.

Houlton had a 12-point first half lead, led by Mia Henderson’s 18 points and 10 rebounds, but PI cut the lead to five at the half. Anna Jandreau scored 18 points to go along with eight rebounds, three steals and three assists. Sjoberg finished with 15 points and added a pair of steals.

Henderson notched a game-high 22 points for the Shiretowners.

On Saturday, the Wildcats jumped out to a 38-9 lead and coasted to the 56-37 road victory over the Orono Red Riots. Jandreau led the way with 18 points, four steals and three assists, while Sjoberg added 16 points, which included four 3-pointers and three steals.  

Presque Isle was scheduled to play a make-up game at No. 2-ranked Hermon Monday at 4 p.m. On Friday, the Wildcats travel to Ellsworth, looking to avenge an early-season loss. Game time is 6:30 p.m. The following afternoon, Mount Desert Island pays a visit to the Presque Isle High School gymnasium for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
