75 Years Ago –   Feb. 27, 1947

Industrial Accident Commission chairman appointed — The appointment of Granville C. Gray as chairman of Maine’s industrial accident commission was confirmed by the governor’s executive council.

Mr. Gray, a member of the commission and a former judge of the Presque Isle municipal court, was appointed chairman of the group for a five-year term.

Umphrey and Bryant were given important committee posts — Harry E. Umphrey, president of Aroostook Potato Growers Inc., was named chairman of the potato division of the United Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Association at its annual meeting in New York. Harold E. Bryant, general manager of Maine Potato Growers Inc., was elected to the advisory committee of the association.

New gym opened on State Road — Forest Chandler of the State Road had converted the upper part of his barn into a “youth center” or gymnasium, and the newly organized Juvenile Grange basketball team played its first game there, meeting the Washburn seventh grade. The “gym” was sheathed with sheetrock, a fine floor had been laid, and comfortable seats built along the sides. A gas heater was used to heat the room.

50 Years Ago –  Feb. 1, 1972

Pinkham elected director — C. Hazen Stetson, chairman, Maine Public Service company, announced during a special meeting of the Board of Directors held Feb. 23 that Thomas S. Pinkham was elected a director to succeed the late David D. Daigle. Although he was born in Houlton, Sept. 1, 1918, Pinkham had lived in Fort Kent most of his life. He attended the Fort Kent public schools and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a degree in economics in 1939. Pinkham was president of Pinkham Lumber,  Inc., of Ashland and T.S. Pinkham, Inc., of Fort Kent. Through the years, the new MPS director had been active in business and civic organizations. He was a member of the Fort Kent Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Kent Rotary Club, a director of Northern National Bank and of Bangor and Aroostook Railroad Company.

King Bruce and Queen Lynda — When the Easton Elementary school held their winter carnival Feb. 12, the students elected a king and queen to reign during the following year. Bruce  Flewelling and Lynda Foren were crowned Eston Elementary School royalty during ceremonies at the gymnasium and were given trophies in honor of the occasion.

Officials of the new group — Officers for the newly organized Senior citizens group in Easton were elected Feb. 15. They were Verna Fuller and Mamie Ladner, program; Oscar Huson, co-chairman; J. Victor Hoyt, chairman; and Stella Dinsmore, secretary-treasurer.

25 Years Ago –  Feb. 26, 1997

White was named staff aide by Snowe — Senator Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) announced the appointment of Kenneth E. White of Presque Isle to the position of staff assistant in the Presque Isle office. White, a 1992 graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle with degrees in behavioral science and criminal justice, was a licensed social worker who had worked for the Maine Department of Human Services the previous four years in Aroostook County. White, whose primary responsibility was consistent casework, joined long-time Snowe-staffer Marion Higgins, regional representative for Aroostook County, in the Presque Isle office. Ken and his wife, Jody, resided in Presque Isle with their 3-year-old daughter, Casey and 1-year-old son, Gehrig.

Barresi Financial employees recognized — Marcus J. Barresi, president of Barresi Financial Inc. of Presque Isle, had earned the Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) and the Registered Employee Benefit Consultant (REBC) designations from the American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. Barresi was one of the first recipients of this designation in Maine. These designations signify expertise in health insurance, disability insurance, executive compensation, and employee benefits. He is a member of the Maine Society of Chartered Life Underwriters and a member of the Maine Society of Chartered LIfe Underwriters and Chartered Agents, and the Maine Association of Life Insurance Underwriters.

UNICEL named sales director — UNICEL Cellular Phone Service announced the appointment of Mark Carney as the company’s new director of sales. Carney was responsible for overseeing all sales activities, both at the retail and business account levels, for the entire company. Carney previously served as an outside sales account executive for UNICEL and was responsible for Penobscot County for six years. A native of Mars Hill, Carney resided in Brewer.
