Polar Dip funds help Special Olympics

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Knights of Columbus of Aroostook recently donated $10,000 to Special Olympics Aroostook following the annual Polar Dip, held May 1 at Long Lake Sporting Club in Sinclair.

Owners of the restaurant re-opened their doors for the special event, and it was the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic that the event was held. Whether they were participants or spectators, people were excited to attend the function.

The sunny 48-degree day was a bit deceiving for participants because the water was only 36 degrees. Regardless, the well-attended event brought smiles to many faces.

Knights representative Mark Bourgoin presented a check to Steve Richard and Carl Michaud, representatives of the Special Olympics Aroostook Area Management Team, in the amount of $10,000, which is the largest donation to date.

“Knights of Columbus of Aroostook have been so gracious and committed to support our endeavors. We simply cannot thank or appreciate them enough for all their hard work in supporting these activities,” Richard said.

Knights of Columbus of Aroostook have been an integral part of the success of Special Olympics Aroostook. Proceeds from the event are used to cover costs associated with conducting various athletic events for individuals having developmental and physical disabilities. Athletes learn and practice valuable lessons in perseverance, competition and sportsmanship, among others.

The funds supply sporting goods and ancillary products for Special Olympics sanctioned events such as swimming, basketball, track and field, and soccer.

The Knights have been a substantial contributor over the years and the partnership is a true example of community support, said Special Olympics officials.
