Vikings outduel Shires in golf, championships up next

HOULTON, Maine — The high school varsity golf season is rapidly coming to a close as golfers try their best to qualify for the state championships.

On Friday, the visiting Caribou Vikings golf team notched a six-stroke victory over Houlton at the Houlton Community Golf Course. Playing in cold, blustery conditions, the Vikings team score of 194 bested Houlton’s final tally of 200 on the day.

“It was a tough day on the course all the way around,” Houlton coach Dave Grant said. 

Medalist on the day was Houlton’s Patrick Marino, who shot a 44.

Other results for Houlton golfers were: Madalyn Quirk, 46; Abby Fitzpatrick, 54; Daniel Henderson, 56; Claire Prescott, 60; and Janie Stone, 62.

Results for Caribou’s golfers were: Lars Spooner, 45; Jared Walton 48; Alex Belanger, 48; Justin Walton, 53; Matt Pelletier, 55; and Luke Beidelman, Avery Thibodeau and Dawson Whitten, each with a 56.  

The Shires will have an opportunity to qualify for the state championships this Thursday as the squad travels to JATO Golf Course in Lincoln for the Penobscot Valley Conference Championships. That event begins at 10 a.m.

Female golfers will also have a second opportunity to qualify for the state individual championships at the Northern Maine Girls Golf Qualifier at Old Town Tuesday at noon.

Caribou, along with Presque Isle, will compete in the PVC Class B Championship and State qualifier at Hermon Meadows on Tuesday.

The Class C State and Individual Championship are slated for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro on the Arrowhead course. The Class B championships are also at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at Natanis on the Tomahawk course.
