HOULTON, Maine – Hopes of qualifying for the state team golf competition were dashed for Houlton last week as the Shires came up short in the PVC Class C championships.

Played at the JATO golf course in Lincoln Thursday, Houlton placed fourth out of four squads with a 407 on the day. Dexter placed first with a 346, followed by Mattanawcook Academy at 361 and George Stevens Academy with a 368.

Thaydon Gentle shot a 92 on the day for the Shires, followed by Patrick Marino with a 100;   Dan Henderson, 107; Madalyn Quirk, 108; and Claire Prescott, 128.

One day earlier, Prescott shot a 98 at the North Region Schoolgirl qualifier earning a spot to compete in the State Individual golf championships later this month at the Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.

“We were missing our No. 4 golfer (Cody Johnston), due to a soccer injury Wednesday night,” Houlton golf coach Dave Grant said. “Missing that score really hurt us, but we are a young team, a couple years out (from competing).”
