High school ski teams battle it out on the slopes of Big Rock

MARS HILL, Maine — Last Saturday was an exciting series of alpine slalom races at Big Rock Ski Area amongst northern Maine high school ski teams in the morning and afternoon.

For the morning races the girls ski team picked up a win for Fort Kent with 792 total points. Fort Kent girls dominated the top three performers with Haidyn Saucier at 200 points as Kendyll Martin claimed 199 points and Mira Kelly carved in 198 points.

Second place was Presque Isle at 773 total points, while Central Aroostook came in third place at 756 points and Maine Central Institute didn’t meet the team requirements but ended up placing fourth with Maddie Gillis racking up 197 total points.

The boys morning ski races also saw Fort Kent win first place at 970 total points with Caribou coming in second place totaling 770 points and Central Aroostook in third place at 765 points. Presque Isle took fourth place with 757 total points and Fort Fairfield only had Josh Schupbach ski a 184 and not meeting the team requirements to place.

The top performers for the boys slalom races were Fort Kents’ Max Bois at 200 points, Presque Isle’s Max Graves carving 199 points, and Caribou’s Eddison Sleeper claiming 198 points.

During the afternoon ski slalom, Central Aroostook took first place for the girls with total points of 767. For the girl skiers, the top scorers were all from Fort Kent with Emerson Bois with 200 points, Haidyn Saucier at 199 points, and Shelby Theriault at 198. 

Despite having the top three scorers, Fort Kent managed to come in second place at 597 total points with Presque Isle in third place at 577 total points. Caribou came in fourth place at 384 total points and Maine Central Institute racked up another 197 total points from Gillis.

For the boys afternoon ski slalom, Caribou took first place at 785 total points followed by Presque Isle at 759 total points, and Central Aroostook in third place with 750 total points. Fort Kent took fourth place with 594 total points to close out the slalom race.

Fort Kent’s Max Bois was top performer at 200 points with his teammate Fletcher Marquis coming in third at 198 points. Caribou’s Eddison Sleeper managed to carve out 199 points to put Caribou over the top for the afternoon boys slalom race.
