75 Years Ago May 27, 1948

Vets’ Training Facilities Officer Joins VA Staff Here – Serving all of Aroostook County and Penobscot north of Bangor, Allan F. Goud, new training facilities officer, has joined the Veterans Administration staff at Houlton.

His work primarily is with disabled veterans. He is the first official in the Aroostook area, however, who, disabled veterans, has governmental authority to survey establishments and pass on federal participation in training programs. His work will take him out of Houlton a good part of the time in this later phase of inspection of facilities for veteran training. Mr. Goud comes to Houlton from Brunswick where he was stationed for two years at Bowdoin College.

Elks Bowling Season Ends With Doubles Tourney – The grand finale of the winter bowling season at the Elk’s Club came to a close recently with the mixed doubles contest in which 32 couples competed. Semi-finalists were Harold and Betty Getchell, Claudia Grant and Norville Reid, Gerald and Anah Grant and Charlie and Mary Wolhaupter. The Grant family bested the Wolhaupter family by 65 pins and moved into the finals to compete against the combination of Claudia Grant and Norville Reid who had defeated the Getchell family by a margin of 25 pins. The formal couple were winners in the final contest, taking the match from the Grant family by 37 pins. Both the winners and the runners-up were presented prizes by Harold Duffy and Laurel Reece, members of the bowling committee.

50 Years Ago May 30, 1973

Haggerty Named Loan Officer – Francis M. Pierce, president of the First National Bank of Aroostook has announced the appointment of David R. Haggerty to the position of loan officer. Mr. Haggerty, who assumed his new position May 7, has been associated with the bank for the past 13 years. Mr. Haggerty is a Houlton native and a graduate of Houlton High School. He has continued to expand his bank training by successfully completing a number of bank courses offered by the American Institute of Banking.

Rick’s Auto Body Opens For Business This Friday – A new business will open in Houlton this week. Richard Baietti, a native of Plymouth, Mass., will open “Rick’s Auto Body” this Friday in the building previously operated by Louis Snell as Houlton Welding. The shop is located on the Ludlow road. Mr. Baietti has had considerable experience in auto-body work. He has spent the past four summers working in body shops, both in Houlton and in Plymouth.
