To the editor:
Have you heard about all the political signs that have gone missing? I have put signs on my lawn for years and 2024 was the first time a sign was touched. That’s okay because I had extras.
We might want to take down someone’s signs, but we know better. I understand that it’s a crime to take political signs of people’s property, but nothing much seems to be getting done with catching and fining the culprits. There have been over 80 signs stolen between Caribou and Presque Isle. They should be ashamed of themselves. We have never had this problem here before. If my neighbor disagrees with me, so be it. We are still neighbors. As the WAGM slogan says, “We are neighbors, we are friends, we are one community.”
When did Aroostook County get like the rest of the country? We’re better than this. The people doing this need to be caught and fined, to know there are consequences to their actions. And as for the sign on Main Street in Presque Isle being taken down by the [Department of Transportation] without giving the people who put it up time to take it down, shame on them. As far as I’m concerned and many people I have talked to, it isn’t as much of a distraction as the 50 small signs (which are harder to read) from Marden’s to Flannel & Barrel causing a bigger distraction because of the small print. Only fair those signs should be removed also.
Let’s remember, after all the signs are gone, we are still neighbors and friends. We need to have each other’s back no matter what our political signs say.
