After five years of dedication, Snow Dogs head coach Spencer King is stepping down from his volunteer role with Special Olympics Aroostook. King, who took over the team in 2019, guided the Snow Dogs through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping athletes engaged with creative training programs and videos.
The Snow Dogs, currently made up of 30 athletes from across Aroostook County, have thrived under King’s leadership. He oversaw both athletes and coaches, ensuring the team not only continued but also grew in spirit and skill during his time.

“This volunteer position has brought many challenges but even more rewards,” said King. “It has been an honor to work with the athletes and be part of this program’s journey.”
Special Olympics has a long history in Aroostook County, beginning in the late 1970s with track and field events. The Snow Dogs have continued to build on the foundation laid by Mike Puleo when the basketball team was officially formed in 1982. Over the years, several head coaches including Brad Stevens, Steve DeMaio, and Brian Hamel have all played vital roles in the program’s success leading up to King’s tenure.
The search is now underway for a new head coach for the 2025–26 season. The ideal candidate will share the Special Olympics’ mission and support the continued growth of this meaningful program.
