CARIBOU, Maine — On Wednesday, Oct. 29 the No. 3 seed Caribou High School Viking boys scored two goals in the final 28 seconds of a Class B North quarterfinal to shock the 11th-seeded Mount Desert Island High School Trojans 2-1.
MDI came into the game looking for a second playoff upset, as the Trojans defeated No. 6 Medomak Valley High School in the prelim round by the score of 3-0. For most of this quarterfinal matchup, MDI stifled the high scoring Vikings to keep the game scoreless.
With just under six minutes remaining in the second half MDI’s Sebastian Cullen tipped a direct kick to teammate Colin Sullivan, who rolled a shot into the goal for the 1-0 lead. With under a minute to go, a Vikings corner kick by Louie Hebert was headed in by Declan Miller to knot the game at 1-1 with only 28 seconds remaining.
After the ensuing MDI kickoff, Caribou regained possession and Carsen Richards sent a long lead pass from midfield toward the MDI goal. Owen Corrigan raced onto the ball, and tapped the ball past the MDI keeper with just 11 seconds on the clock for the improbable 2-1 lead. MDI’s bid to tie the game on a direct kick hit the outside of the Caribou net as time expired.
With the victory, the Vikings record now goes to 11-3-1, and they move on to the Class B North semifinals against second seed Oceanside High School on Saturday, Nov. 2. The MDI Trojans end the season in heart-breaking fashion with a record of 10-6.
