Flewelling honored for promoting recreation

Landowner recognized
Fred Flewelling, of Crouseville, was recently chosen as one of only a handful of private landowners to receive Landowner of the Year, presented by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. DIFW also gave him thanks for his outstanding commitment to all outdoor recreational activities. He was nominated by the Washburn Trail Runners Snowmobile Club in Washburn and cited by them for all he has done for the local snowmobiling industry.
Flewelling has been active in the Trial Runners from the start and is a founding member who has contributed to the club and the community as a whole. He allowed trails to be established on his property and helped with trail maintenance over all parts of the local area trail system. His efforts were more than helpful in changing an old fertilizer plant into the “top-of-the-line” building the club enjoys today. He was also responsible for designing and manufacturing a brush guard which assists in producing smoother trails.
Credit was given to him for his efforts in working alongside the Washburn Trail Runners, the town of Washburn, landowners and abutters, along with the Maine Department of Conservation, concerning the local ITS 83 system.
Fred is a busy potato and grain farmer but also keeps busy during the snowmobiling season, always ready to use his own shop welding and repairing grooming equipment. He is also an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. In addition, Fred is active in his church and a former Farmer of the Year.
Captain Dan Scott of the Maine Warden Service presented Fred with a certificate and a framed wildlife print during a ceremony held at the Augusta Civic Center on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Guests enjoyed a social hour and supper prior to the presentations. Along with Fred and Patsy Flewelling, those attending from the local area included Billy Pike, Carroll Sperrey, Loren Johnson, Rodney and Cheryl Sperrey, Dean and Debbie Bird, Alan Carter, Dan and Sylvia Bridgham.

Rec Center schedule
The seniors who participate in the monthly outings enjoyed a good meal and good conversation on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the Washburn Soup Kitchen. They took this time to share a meal on the next to the last day they were being served at the Kitchen and had a delicious lunch of ham, mashed potatoes and peas and carrots, as well as chocolate or strawberry milk, coffee, tea or water.
Each of the ladies left a donation to help with a few more items for food boxes and all thanked Elizabeth Richardson for her good work in establishing the Kitchen and food boxes which will still be put up through November and December.
The meal was prepared and served by Elizabeth Richardson and Mildred Bennett and those attending included: Barbara McLaughlin, Marcie Barbarula, Gwen Bragg, Christie Cochran, Lorraine Harrison, Fran Dickinson, Arlene Cole, Wilda Goodall, Audrey Pavlick, Sylvia Wardwell, Bern Rossignol, Norma Baker, Glenna Bragg, Drucilla Turner, Eunice Carman, Anita Tarr, Charlene Maynard, Jeanne Adams, Linda Seward, Viola Helstrom and Mary Jane Sperrey.

Soup Kitchen serves last meals

The Washburn Soup Kitchen will be closing its doors on Thursday, Oct. 29, but they will be putting up food boxes in November and December on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to noon.
Without the combined efforts of the Kitchen crew volunteers and the Soup Kitchen Board members, the Soup Kitchen would not have been successful the past year. Much appreciation and thanks goes out to the kitchen crew including Mildred Bennett, Glenna Bragg, Margaret Barker, Falicia Rossignol, Gary Alley, Terry Winger, Alice Curtis, Barb Churchill, Polly Albert, Carolyn Rossignol, Dolly Norris, Jackie Pribble, Alexis Winslow and Taylor Skinner. Board members included Dolores Woodman, Mildred Bennett, Donna Turner, Don Peary, Lucy Lovely, Adina Wilson, T.J. Winslow and Elizabeth Wilson. Both the volunteers and Board members hope it may be possible to start another Kitchen in the nearby future, but stress that this would require efforts from the area groups, the municipality, the Washburn churches, as well as groups and community residents. During the past week or two, the Kitchen clients have voiced their concerns about how they’ll be able to make out this coming winter. If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to contact Elizabeth at 764-3167 or 455-4900.
