Summertime in The County is a busy time — lots of parades, class reunions, family gatherings and other comjmunity events geared to help everyone enjoy the brief window of warm weather they all look forward to after a long winter. The July 4th weekend in Stockholm was no exception.
On July 3, the Perkins/Plourde American Legion 136 Post Home was filled to capacity, as local residents, Legionnaires, visitors and guests arrived early to get a good seat for the comedy production, “Those Were the Days” sponsored by members of the American Legion and Auxiliary of Post 136.
The large crowd filled the air with a combination of laughter and chatter as well as every seat in the house. The evening began with guests enjoying their choice(s) from an impressive array of homemade desserts, allowing for even more time to socialize and get caught up on the latest news.
As everyone settled down, their attention directed toward the stage, Kathy Robinson, who created the 10 scripts that made up the “Those Were the Days” production, welcomed everyone and introduced the emcee for the event, Sven Bondeson, who according to Robinson, “makes Brad Pitt look like a little girl.”
Throughout the next hour the audience was taken on a trip down TV memory lane, as local residents portrayed, in the best of humor, easily recognized favorite television characters including Aunt Bea and Marshal Dillon.
Although the length of each skit was short, they were long on laughter — some due to the scene’s dialogue, some the result of the actors having a difficult time remembering their lines.
Last year Robinson created scenes for a similar production which featured a French Cafe theme, complete with dinner entrees from that culture and of course the very memorable — ‘Can Can’ dancers.
This year the theme was different but there was no doubt that the success of the production remained the same.
Organizers for the July 3 event included: Myrna Dixon, set director; Devin Berkoski and Daniel Fields, stage hands; Bill Duncan, sound; and Albertine Dufour, flowers. Also, as previously mentioned, Kathy Robinson, scripts and Sven Bondeson, emcee.
