Thousands had already descended on the Aroostook County border town ahead of the marquee event of the area’s biggest festival.
The upgraded lab will help ensure Maine continues to grow its potato industry, UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy said.
“Late-blight spore counts dropped sharply over the past week and there are still no confirmed cases in Maine,” Extension scientists said.
The disease hasn’t yet been reported in Maine, but spores were detected across Aroostook County.
Saturday’s session is first in a series that will prepare local crews for such things as equipment rollovers, harvester accidents, chemical fires and even large animal rescues.
The online farmer’s market eliminates uncertainty and waste for farmers because they know what has been ordered versus projecting what they might sell at a farm stand or farmer’s market.
The closure, according to the board, will only take place this year.
The Friends of Cross Lake is partnering with the County of Aroostook, the St. John Valley Soil & Water Conservation District and others in a conservation project featuring cover crops.
